Cultural Identity Wrap Up

Salad Bowl vs Melting Pot

I have learned that in the United States today; the trend is toward multiculturalism, not assimilation. The old "melting pot" figure is giving way to new figures such as "salad bowl" and "mosaic", mixtures of various ingredients that keep their individual characteristics. Immigrant populations within the United States are not being blended together in one "pot", but rather they are transforming American Society into a truly multicultural mosaic. The American mosaic is one of different cultures and regional identities, each with unique characteristics and flavors. Americans often think of themselves not only as coming from a particular ethnic heritage, but also of being part of a geographical region. Understanding these regional characteristics and flavors is an excellent way to get to know Americans.

Cultural Identity – Wrap up Monica

Do you have or have not cultural identity?

Does everybody have a Cultural Identity? Well, my personal answer is no. We can be in this world without roots and be citizens of any part without specific origin or when you really don’t know where place you are, but at the same time this is a little sad, when you have a cultural identity and you are proud of that, just enjoy it and be free to show it. Have a cultural identity is like you are in an exclusive club and that is cool, does not? For me be a Latin girl, who speak Spanish, who enjoy the arepas and Colombian Tamales (traditional Colombian food) and we love our Juan Valdez coffee with our Conchita his mule, it is the best feeling you can have in the world and more when you know somebody in the street of any place in the world and he/she says, I am from Colombia, I am paisa too (person who is from Medellin-Colombia). So doesn’t matter if you are Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic, white, Asian, African American continue with your traditions, don’t be afraid, and just have a open mind of other heritages that is nice to know and have friends from all around the world.

Cultural Identity Wrap Up

GLOBALIZATION VS AMERICANIZATION

Globalization is not the same with Americanization. Globalization is the psychological transformation that’s affecting people everywhere, in every country in every city. The globalization attach all the things that the people use and have in every country of all the world like the communication that all the people have with internet, cellphones and mails, another thing is sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc. Now all the people play in every part of the world and they never will forget it. Americanization is the transformation that affects people in United States, Americanization are the customs, characteristics and behaviors that the people learn in this country like eat in Mc Donald’s, listen music such as Madonna, Usher, Selena Gomez, etc. And other example is buy things at mega-malls. All those things are the reasons because globalization is not the same with Americanization.
